Date: 23 Sep 1998
I am looking for any and all information on two families that lived in Monroe Co., WV during the latter half of the 1800's. The first family is that of John M. REED (c 1839 - c 1910?) and his wife Sophia (c 1848 - 192?). They moved to Monroe Co. from Floyd Co., VA and had the following children, all of whom were born in Monroe Co.: Andrew (b 1868), Joshua (1870 - 195?), Mary (b 1872), Elkaney (1874 - c 1952), Josie (187 - c1948), James Henry (my g-grandfather; 1884 - 1968) and John "Jack" (c 1887 - c 1932). Henry and Jack were well known for the musical abilities (fiddle playing and guitar) and lived in the Glen Lyn, Va and Hinton, WV areas, respectively, during their adult lives. Josh and Elkaney apparently resided in Cashmere, WV and spent most of their adult lives there. As for the rest of the siblings (Andrew, Mary and Josie), not much info is known. The second Monroe Co. family I'm seeking info on is the Joshua UNDERWOOD family. Joshua (1826 - 19??) was also from Floyd Co., VA and moved his family to Monroe Co. about the same time as John and Sophia REED. He and his wife, Mary (a.k.a. Polly or Betsy; c1825 - 191?) were the parents of Sophia and her several siblings and apparently resided in the Lindside area near Peterstown. Any information (including names, dates, places, etc.) on the ancestors, family members or descendants of those listed above would be very much appreciated, especially if it concerns the family of John REED. Thanks a lot, Bob Reed

Searching for father of William Bean. William was born 1792 and indentured out to a Henry Smith in Monroe County on 9/18 1804. Owen Neel was overseer of the poor in Monroe county at that time. William married Rachel Wiseman in 1813. He lived first around Zenith, then moved to the area around Waiteville where his house (locally called the McCormick house) still stands. He died Jan 1, 1864 and his will was probated for many years. There were 1600 acres in his estate. There was another boy, a John Bean that was indentured on 2/20 1804. He was indentured out to a John Neel. The children of William and Rachel are pretty much accounted for and The Wiseman family is pretty well accounted for. We need to know anything about William's father. Thanks

Am looking for ancestors and WV descendents of James FITZPATRICK (my ggg-grandfather) and Jeremiah SMITH (my gg-grandfather) who moved from Monroe Co., WV, to Hillsboro, OH, in 1805. James was married to Mary CREED; Mary's brother Matthew fought in the Revolutionary War and the Battle of Point Pleasant with James and Jeremiah. Jeremiah married James' daughter Sarah FITZPATRICK. James FITZPATRICK started Methodist churches in Hillsboro, OH, and was probably associated with Rehobeth Church in Union, WV. prior to his move to OH. Information about ancestors and the whereabouts of the Fitzpatricks and the Smiths prior to their residing in Monroe Co., WV, will be greatly appreciated.
