Surnames: MCCLOWNEY MCELDOWNEY
Submitter: James T. Curran (bodhran@earthlink.net)
Date: 22 Jan 2001
In June 2000 I posted a query for a Robert McEldowney who, in 1842, paid tuition for 3 daughters in Monroe Co, WV. No information has surfaced, but I have found something in Census Indexes thta may have a bearing on it. To understand it, you must know that the McEldowney name has had more variants in public records than any other family name I have ever seen. I have found the name McClowney in the 1840, 1850 & 1860 censuses and suspect that might mean McEldowney. The 1850 census is the key one because it is the most likely to tie the two names together based on the names of the 3 daighters: Elizabeth, Lettie & Nancy. Does anyone have access to the 1850 census itself and can they check for the names of everyone in the Robert McClowney family?

Date: 22 Apr 2001
I am looking for information on Margaret I. Perry Born March 13, 1852 in Monroe County. Her parents are reportedly Ezra and Elizabeth Perry. I have been able to Find Margaret listed in census' with her husband, but cannot find anything listing her with her parents. We have been told that Ezra Perry was also born in Monroe County Virginia about 1820. In the 1850 census I found an Ezra Perry who would have been born in 1812 living with another Perry family. He is listed as a carpenter and 38 years of age. This is the most I have been able to find regarding an Ezra Perry in Monroe County. I'm not certain our family records are accurate because if Margaret were born in 1852, I think our family records should list the birth place as Monroe County West Virginia (not Virginia by that time). Any help you can give would be appreciated!

LAWRENCE and WALLACE in NC > WV? > AL,MS,TN > OK > TX For some 15 years we've been searching for the ancestry of James Arthur Lawrence (JAL) b. 25 Aug 1865 TN, d. 2 Feb 1918 Inez, TX, m. Ruth Wallace b. 1869 TN. They married in San Marcos, Hays County, TX in 1893. They owned property near Henly, TX contemporary with other Lawrences, including Henry Overton Lawrence, son of Matterson Lawrence, a doctor, both buried in Henly, Hays County, TX. Dr Matterson Lawrence appears as Madison Laurence in the 1850 census in Monroe County, WV married to Malinda Wallace and as Madison Lawrence in 1860 census in Lavaca County, TX without her. His children were Henry, William, and Nancy. No relation established to JAL. Family tradition says JAL was raised near where TN, MS and AL "corner out" in Shanghai, AL (near Hickory Hills in Limestone County) and Ikua, MS in Tishomingo County. His mother's name was Molly Agnes. His father may have been named James Arthur also, or John. His father was one of five brothers who fought in the Civil War. Three were killed. His father died nine years after the War was over. JAL had siblings or aunts and uncles named Lella, John, and twins Hubert and Herbert. They moved together to the Choctaw Nation, perhaps near Ada, OK. Some family disagreement, perhaps involving a woman, caused part of the group to move to Texas. Which ones moved and their relation is not known. We first see JAL at the time of his marriage to Ruth Wallace in Hays County in 1893. On the 1900 census he gave his birthplace as TN, father NC, mother AL.
