The interests, past and current, of Charles F. Bachmann, have stamped him as a man of large calibre. He is a builder, with talents tempered to big enterprise. As merchant, industrial organizer and general business executive, he has for half a century been accorded the respect of all who know him. He is today president of the Bachmann Realty Company and of the Tyler Iron Works, both of Wheeling; is a director of the Bertha Consumers Coal Company, Pittsburgh, a ten-million-dollar corporation; director, Half Dollar Bank, Wheeling; and secretary, Washington Transportation Company, Wheeling.
Mr. Bachmann, who is the father of Congressman Carl G. Bachmann, was born in Wheeling, June 25, 1865, son of Peter and Augustina (Valentine) Bachmann, and attended public schools. In 1884 he went to work with Baer's Grocery Company, Wheeling. Later he became associated with his father in P. Bachmann & Sons, wholesale produce dealers, which business was developed to be one of the largest in this section. For forty years Mr. Bachmann remained with that firm, leaving it in 1922 to engage in real estate investment brokerage and to give fuller time to his coal interests.
Mr. Bachmann's life has been one of unremitting business pressure. Notable among his activities has been his association with the Bertha Consumers Coal Company of Pittsburgh. With John H. Jones he took part in the organization of this immense corporation, representing the founders in the Wheeling district, purchasing coal lands and putting mines in operation. In the other enterprises now receiving his attention, he has been similarly active.
He is a Republican in politics and is affiliated with the I. O. O. F.
He was married to Miss Sophia C. Neuhard, of Wheeling. Their children are Congressman Carl G. Bachmann, Mrs. Alma Pigeon of Philadelphia, Mrs. Angela Jasper of Wheeling, and Mrs. Adelaide Stobbs of Wheeling.
