     George Birch (also Burch), born in Illinois about 1844, was the son of George Burch/Birch, a glass cutter, born in England, and Jane, born in New York.

     On 6 July 1863, George Birch, 19, mustered into service as a sergeant in Company "A" 4th West Virginia Cavalry. This company was organized for six months. On 22 Aug 1864, he mustered in as a private in Battery "H" 1st West Virginia Light Artillery. Three months later, on 28 Nov, he was captured at New Creek.

     George married Flora B. Dickerson 23 Oct 1863 at West Alexander, Pennsylvania. However, he is found with his parents and siblings in the 1870 census. Were they separated or divorced?

     George Birch died 2 Oct 1878 and is buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Wheeling. The date of interment given in the Mt. Zion Cemetery book is 13 Oct 1879. He is buried in the same lot with George Sr, Jane, and others.
