The title summarizes the story, "The Uphill Climb, Defying the odds on the Wellsburg, Bethany, and Washington Railway." It was a trolley that operated from Wellsburg, West Virginia to Bethany, West Virginia from 1908 to 1925. It is a narrative of two communities willing to take a risk, to change their circumstances.
The book contains over a 100 rarely seen photos about a local trolley railway and the people that were involved with it. Hijacking, rails hanging in mid air, accidents, deaths, schemes to avoid paying fares, goals and dreams are all part of this trolley story.
Why was there a span of over twenty years from the earliest idea of this railway to opening day? The original plan was to have rail transportation from Wellsburg to Bethany, West Virginia. One of the proposed destinations was Washington, Pennsylvania. Why did some local residents think it never would be built? What drove the railway investors to pursue a dream that seemed to be on the brink of failure? Once operations started in 1908, why were some people hesitant to ride on it?
This is not only a history of a trolley but also of the surrounding region, and the people who were involved with an unlikely venture.
