The Family of Robert H. "Bob" Campbell, Owner of "Bob's Place"

Greg Hicks' grandfather, Bob, was the owner of "Bob's Place," located where the Go-Mart now stands, coming into Saint Marys from the south on Rt. 2.

Robert Harrison "Bob" Campbell, born June 10, 1890, was the son of Robert G. W. Campbell and Martha Aston, who were married in Marshall County, West Virginia 17 Nov 1887; Martha is called "Mattie" in some census records. Robert G. W. died in 1928 and is buried at Malone Cemetery, Pleasants County. Martha A. Campbell died 13 Jul 1954 and she is buried at the Willow Island Cemetery. The first wife of Robert G. W. Campbell was Emma J. Malone, who died of consumption in June 1884. They were married 29 Aug 1878 in Pleasants County.

Bob was the grandson of Civil War soldier, Robert R. Campbell, who is buried at Campbell Cemetery on Horseneck. Robert R. [Middle initial in various WV Adjutant General's records is "K."] died 27 Aug 1864 at New Creek, Mineral County, (W) Virginia, while serving in Company "H" 11th West Virginia Infantry. The soldier's wife was Massa Welling, daughter of Edward Welling and Sarah Ruckman, who moved from Marshall County to Pleasants County circa 1850. In "Early Marriages of Wood County," page 70, Robert Campbell and Nancy Welling were married 29 Mar 1849. It is not known why she was called Nancy. Her grandmother (Edward's mother) was Massa Chambers Welling. See this information: Massa Chambers Welling & Son, Edward.

Bob Campbell first married Bessie Malone. She died in 1916 of burns sustained when her clothes caught fire near an open fire. She is buried at the Malone Cemetery, Pleasants County. Bob's second wife was Ora Childers who died 15 May 1875. Bob died July 11, 1979 in Pleasants County and both are buried at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in St. Marys.

Mrs. Martha Campbell, 93, died July 13 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Roberts of Farmington, Mich.

She was born in Cameron [Marshall County], in 1861, and spent most of her life in Pleasants county. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. Campbell.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Massie Helm of Oboling, Ill.; Mrs. Clara Miller of St. Marys; and Mrs. Roberts of Farmington; two sons, Robert H., Sr. and John L. Campbell, both of St. Marys; 28 grandchildren; 56 greatgrandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The body was brought to the Corbitt funeral home in Waverly and funeral services were conducted at 3:30 p. m. Friday at the Willow Island Baptist Church. Interment was made in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Ora Campbell, 79, of St. Marys, died Thursday in Worthington Manor Nursing Home, Parkersburg. She was born in Pleasants County, daughter of the late Orlando and Nora Edna Childers. She received her teaching certificate at Middlebourne Normal School and taught grades 1-8 at Bull Creek and Horse Neck earlier in her life. She and her husband, Robert H. Campbell, who survives, opened a service station in 1928 on 3d and Lafayette Sts., which later became a restaurant and grocery and is still in operation. In addition to her husband, survivors include one daughter, Eloise Hicks of Parkersburg; two sons, Lyle Campbell and Orlando Campbell, both of Parkersburg; one stepdaughter, Marsie Riggs of St. Marys; one stepson, Robert Campbell of Parkersburg; six sisters, Pansey Childers, Pauline Liggett, Sylvia Meredith, Susie Thomas, Kathleen Mercer and Imogene Hendricks; and four brothers, Howard Childers, Werter Childers, Woodrow Childers and Dean Childers; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2pm Saturday at the Ruttencutter Funeral Home in St. Marys. Burial in the IOOF Cemetery in St. Marys.

Robert George Campbell, prominent Parkersburg businessman, builder and land developer, died in Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, June 15.

He was born in Pleasants County, a son of Robert Campbell of St. Marys and the late Bessie Malone Campbell. He is survived by his wife, Mary Smith Campbell; one son, Robert Campbell of Houston, TX; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Louise Case of Annandale, VA, and Mrs. Jean Gainer of Vienna; one sister, Mrs. Massie Riggs of St. Marys; two step-brothers, Orlando and Lyle, both of Parkersburg; one step- sister, Mrs. Eloise Hicks of Parkersburg; seven grandchildren.

Services were held Friday at the Willow Island Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Keeper officiating. Burial in the IOOF Cemetery in St. Marys.

Eloise Campbell, 80, of Parkersburg, died Sept. 13, 1998, at Harmar Place in Marietta.

She was born in St. Marys. She was a member of the North Parkersburg Baptist Church and was a former employee of Roberta's Catering Service. She was a Camden-Clark Hospital volunteer and was active in Sunday School and other church activities.

Survivors include one son, Robert W. Campbell of Nassau Bay, TX; two daughters, Jean Gainer of Vienna and Mary Louise Case of Burke, VA; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Reva J. Sheffer of Dearborn, MI.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Jenny Louise Gabert Smith; her husband, Robert G. Campbell; one brother, George W. Smith; and three sisters, Nita Smith, Clea Smith, and Ruth Nell Smith.

Services will be held 11am Tuesday at the North Parkersburg Baptist Church. Burial in the IOOF Cemetery in St. Marys.

St. Marys, W.Va. - Robert H. Campbell, 89, of Third and Lafayette streets, died yesterday morning (July 11, 1979) at Worthington Manor Nursing Home, Parkersburg.

He was born in Pleasants County, to the late Robert and Martha Aston Campbell. He owned and operated a grocery store-restaurant-service station in St. Marys for more than 50 years.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Wiley (Elouise) Hicks of Parkersburg, and Mrs. Blaine (Massie) Riggs of St. Marys; two sons, Lyle L. and Orlando C., both of Parkersburg; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bessie Malone Campbell, in 1911; and his second wife,Ora Childers Campbell, in 1975.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in Ruttencutter Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Dooley and Evangelist Cecil Dotson officiating. Burial will be in the St. Marys IOOF Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon today.
