MESSAGE FROM JIM MOORE:

I have several family members on my mothers side buried in this cemetery.

Several years ago, (maybe as many as 12 to 15) my family decided to get into this cemetery. This was primarily motivated by grandmother Edna (Eddy) Metts. At that time, the last 1 to 1 1/2 miles of road into the cemetery was virtually impassable. We literally walked into it. As you can imagine, the cemetery had not been mowed for several years and was in very sad shape. As the years passed, it became a family outing to get into the cemetery to mow and cut brush. Sometimes we walked taking push mowers and weedeaters. Some times (very exciting to boot) we were able to four-wheel drive into it with riding mowers, etc. We used it as a time to get together with family, took a picnic lunch and had a great time.

Early on, an elderly gentlemen, well-known by my mother and grandmother, lived at the end of the road near Rt. 16. One year he went out with his farm tractor and brushhog and was very helpful. I forget his name at this point, but everyone in the area knew him. I believe he died in the recent past.

Another great help came from a lady who worked with either the Ritchie or Pleasant Co. road department. As time went on, if we know approximately when we were planning to go in, she tried to arrange some grader work to be done to the road which was a great help. Later, the road was improved due to logging and well activities. Recently the road has been very well kept up due to the area opening up to mobile homes, hunting camps, etc.

Sorry I don't personally remember the names of these individuals, but I'm sure my mother does.

Currently, the cemetery is readily accessable. Occasionally other people have been know to mow part or all of the cemetery. My family still gets in 2 or 3 times a year to mow and clean. Periodically we re-set some stones and do odds-and ends. I have several photographs of past work parties which bring back a lot of memories. Sometimes we would have as many as 10 or 12 family and friends present.

Mrs. Shaffer, formerly of the Douglas Run area, heard about our outings and over the years provided limited funds from a trust set up for the cemetery. We have used it for gas, supplies, quick-mix concrete etc. towards the upkeep.

*NOTE: George Atkinson was my gggrandfather. The information in the Ritchie County Cemetery book regarding his Civil War Service is incorrect. The cemetery book says "Co C, 13th WV Inf." My ancestor, proven by his pension papers, the History of Washington County, OH, and the 1890 Special Census for Ritchie County, was in Company "F", 36th Ohio Inf. - There is NO "Co C, 13th WV Inf" on his stone. He was married to Sarah Agnes Britton and death certificate from Ritchie County gives dod as 2-20-1924. - There was a George Atkinson in the Civil War, 13th WV Infantry, but he married a Lucinda Morehead and died in Iowa. - Linda Cunningham Fluharty

**NOTE: This is the triple stone of Ellenor E., Daniel R. and William J., the first three children of Abraham and Sarah Douglas, who died of dipthera and were buried in the same casket in Harmony Grove per our Bills family genealogy. - Gerald Bills.
