ST. JOHNS CEMETERY

SIGN

As part of the restoration of the St. John's Episcopal Cemetery restoration, Jim Marriott designed and built a new sign which was erected on State Route 2 at the entrance to the area where the cemetery is located. Jim has ancestors buried in the cemetery. The old Willow Island Post Office in the background.

DIRECTIONS:
From State Route 2 at Wood County line, go 2.8 miles north into Pleasants County; cemetery new Willow Island Post Office at Cow Creek.

More directions, provided by George Sharp:

"Go through the gate onto the private property of American Cyanamid and follow the abandoned road through the bow hunter's target area. After about a quarter mile there is a break in the trees on the left and up a hill. Cemetery is at the top of the hill. No stones can be seen from the road. Cemetery has long been abandoned and many of the markers have been moved and no longer mark the actual gravesites."

CEMETERY CLEANED UP IN 2000.

A Note From Gerald E. Bills, 02/01/2001

A severe wind storm went through the area in recent years which blew down timber. The timber was sold and removed from the property. This permitted clearing and general clean up of the cemetery. It is my understanding that this effort was supported by the Grace Episcopal Church, 317 Riverside Drive, St. Marys, WV 26170. Also, it is my understanding that a work crew from the local state correction institution was made available to clear up the heavy brush and pile it for burning. This past year, I have worked with Harvey Hatfield, Bryan Bills, and Mr.and Mrs Everett McCoullough to do final mowing, burning of brush, and resetting of grave markers. This also included updating and publishing of the list as you now see it on the web.

Harvey Hatfield is a vesteryman of the Episcopal Church and is working on getting a continued program for maintenance in place. Mr. and Mrs McCoullough have had a sign for the cemetery made for placement as soon as weather permits. Bryan and I will continue to support maintenance of the cemetery as time and health permits. This entire group with the exception of Harvey (Retired Undertaker) is Seventy Plus.

The following photos were taken last fall (2000) after we finished restoring stones and the overall general clean up.
