There Ain't No Apostrophe In St Marys

A smart and stylish man was he,
He had a college bought degree,
He wished to buy some timber land,
And so he took his pen in hand,
But when it was all said and done
He hurt the Pleasant Countian,
He did a capital crime you see,
Spelling St Marys with an apostrophe.

There ain't no apostrophe in St Marys,
There ain't no apostrophe in St Marys,
There ain't no apostrophe in St Marys,
There ain't no apostrophe in St Marys.

Old Alex Creel, a traveler bold,
Floated by here in days of old,
He saw a vision on the shore,
Said it was the Virgin Mother for sure.
A prosperous city he did foresee,
But it wouldn't be spelled with no apostrophe.
St Marys I will call it, he did exclaim,
And it won't have no apostrophe in its name.

Settlers came by the score,
Soon the Logan brothers built a store,
Others came to commence our history,
And none of 'em ever spelt St Marys with no apostrophe.
Reynolds, and Pickens, and Bills and Cain,
Gallagher, and Wilson - the proud and profane,
Of their vision and effort we're grateful to be,
And none of 'em ever spelt St Marys with no apostrophe.

Men of education and cap and gown,
Didn't like the way we spelt our town,
These men - who should have known their p's and q's,
Even said St Marys was in Old Vacluse.
But though the years have gone the changes have come,
An apostrophe in St Marys is still argued by some,
But God is The Master and so said He,
I don't want St Marys spelt with no apostrophe.
