Thomas L. Atha

Thomas L. Atha, 81, of Sophia, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998 in a Charleston hospital following a long illness. Born March 27, 1919 in Fayette County, he was the son of the late Thomas Nathan and Wabie Ethel Harvy Atha. Mr. Atha was a construction worker, a member of AFCIO Local 483, a U.S. Army veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart in World War II. He attended Pierpoint Freewill Baptist. He was preceded in death by a sister, Cathran Boggs. Survivors include his wife, Maudie Payton Atha of Sophia; two sons, Steve Lee Atha of Beckley and Thomas Allen Atha of Sophia; a brother, Donald Ray Atha of Tennessee; a sister, Elizabeth Whitt of Norfolk, Va.; and two granddaughters, Cynthia Dawn and Jennifer Lynn Atha of Beckley. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Sophia. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Sophia/Midway VFW Post 4326 will conduct graveside rites. Arrangements by Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia.


Walter R Atha

SANDLICK - Walter Raleigh Atha, 84, of Athey Place, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Feb. 22, 1916, at Harper, he was the son of the late French and Icie Williams Atha. A lifelong resident of Sandlick, Mr. Atha was a member of the Mattsville Community Church and was retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways. His family will remember him as a good husband and kind father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Dickens Atha, on Jan. 10, 1997; and a brother, Dallas. Survivors include a son, Lowell Atha and his wife Georgia of Sandlick; two grandchildren, Mrs. Robert (Melissa) Athey and Mrs. Aaron (Vickie) England; six great-grandchildren, Stacey, Robbie, Zane, Sydney, April and Jessica; one brother, Tom Atha of Sandlick; four sisters, Mrs. Joe (Bessie) Stover of Dameron, and Mrs. Herman (Lessie) Price, Mrs. Paris (Hallie) Peters, and Mrs. Robert (Betty) Burgess, all of Sandlick. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Revs. Ronnie Hall and Jerry Tyree officiating. Burial will follow in the Turner Cemetery at Sandlick. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Melton Mortuary and one hour prior to services Tuesday. Pallbearers will be Robert Athey, Aaron England, Euly Webb, Ronnie Dillon, David Webb, and Kevin Williams. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley.
