Obituaries for the Barton Family
Mildred Louise Lilly Barton, 84, of Beckley, formerly of Crab Orchard and Salem, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Feb. 17, 1917, at Pemberton, she was the daughter of the late Charles M. and Minnie Bare Lilly. Mrs. Barton spent her childhood in Beckley. She lived in Crab Orchard for a number of years where she raised her children. She resided in Salem, Va., for 20 years with her late husband, the Rev. John Barton, who died on June 24, 1986. She and the Rev. Barton were members of the Greenhill Church of the Brethren at Salem. Due to ill health, she has resided in Beckley for several years. She was the last survivor of her immediate family. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Norma Thompson. Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Booth of Greensboro, N.C.; four sons, David Thompson of Shady Spring, Benny Thompson and his wife, Hope, of Lafayette, Ga., Charles Thompson and his wife, Linda, of Crab Orchard, and Gary Thompson and his wife, Vickie, of Crab Orchard; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Committal service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Sherwood Memorial Park Mausoleum at Salem, Va. Burial will follow in the Memorial Park. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary, Beckley. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley.
Patrick John Barton
Patrick John Barton, 27, of Fireco, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Raleigh General Hospital following an auto accident. Born Jan. 22, 1974, in Beckley, he was the son of Asher and Patricia Joan Meadows Barton of Fireco. He was a lifelong resident of Fireco. He was of the Baptist faith. He graduated from Independence High School and received an associate's degree in business and a B.S. degree in business from West Virginia University Institute of Technology. He was preceded in death by a brother, Asher Barton II; his paternal grandparents, William R. and Elsie Mabel Barton; and his maternal grandparents, Ellot and Ethel Meadows. Survivors include his sisters, Heidi Weddle and husband Robert of Sophia and Penelope Trent and husband Enoch of Lanark; several aunts, uncles and cousins; nieces and nephews, Kayla Barton, Emily Weddle, Keli Weddle, Justin Trent, Emily Trent, and Jordan Trent; and a special cousin, Libby Roberts of Crab Orchard. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with the Rev. Charlie Bolen officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Entombment will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.
