Barbara Huffman Berkley

ALDERSON - Barbara Huffman Berkley, 82, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at her home in Alderson following a sudden illness. Born July 5, 1919, in Alderson, she was the daughter of the late John Orr and Cecile Thurmond Huffman. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Elwin H. Roberts; her second husband, Earl E. Berkley; and a sister, Doris Fawcett. Mrs. Berkley was a homemaker and a teacher's aide at Alderson Elementary School for several years. She was a 1936 graduate of Alderson High School. In 1942 she married Elwin H. Roberts and lived outside the Alderson area where they ministered to several churches. In 1963, she returned to Alderson to serve Alderson Presbyterian Church, where she became an elder. She was a voice in the choir and a member until her death. Mrs. Berkley married Earl E. Berkley in 1974, and they spent their retirement years farming in Greenbrier and Summers counties. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and numerous civic organizations within the community. Survivors include two sons, David E. Roberts and his wife, Leisa, of Sneads Ferry, N.C., and John L. Roberts and his wife, Betsy, of Bowling Green, Ohio; a daughter, Kay R. McCoy and her husband, Gary, of Alderson; four stepchildren, Richard Berkley and his wife, Anne, of Durham, N.C., William Berkley of Scottsdale, Ariz., Caroline Sullivan and her husband, Jim, of Danville, Ky., and Anne Brenner and her husband, Andrew, of Urbana, Ill.; a sister, Mary Jo Pruett of Danville, Va.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Alderson Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Deana Armstrong and Stewart McMurray officiating. Burial will be in Fletcher Addition of Alderson Cemetery. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson, and one hour before service Thursday at the church. Arrangements by Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson.
