Eloise C Birley

OCEANA - Eloise Cook Birley, 80, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Feb. 5, 1921, in Oceana, she was the daughter of the late Don L. and Zetta Mahone Cook. Mrs. Birley was a direct descendant of John Cook, first settler of Wyoming County, and the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Oceana, John Cook Chapter NSDAR and Eastern Star No. 100 of Mullens. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Garnett A. Birley, in September 1987; a son, Michael Gene Birley, in 1994; a daughter, Linda Karen Birley, in 1951; a brother, Eldon Cook; and a sister, Grace Jarrell. Survivors include a son, Gary A. Birley and his wife, Hope, of Oceana; a daughter, Sharon Rogers and her husband, Don, of Houston; seven grandchildren, Lisa Morgan and her husband, Justin, Lori Stewart and her husband, Bryan, Debra Kramer and her husband, Dennis, Greg Burkett and his wife, Shelly, Chris Burkett and his wife, Kelly, Glen Rogers and his wife, Tonia, and Michael Rogers and his wife, Flora; and 15 great-grandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Oceana with the Rev. Jerry Cook officiating. Entombment will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Matheny. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, Oceana. Pallbearers will be Justin Morgan, Bryan Stewart, Greg Burkett, Chris Burkett, Glen Rogers and Michael Rogers. Arrangements by Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home, Oceana.
