Thomas Edward Blevins

Thomas Edward “Shorty” Blevins, 66 year old resident of 104 Ridge Avenue, Beckley died in a local hospital yesterday at 1:20 am following a lengthy illness.  He was born at Wytheville, Va. and had been a resident of Raleigh County for the past 35 years.  He was a body repairman for Lewis Chevrolet Company.    He was a corps sergeant-major in the Salvation Army.  Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Esta Gunnoe Blevins; three sons, Thomas O., of Dallas, Tx., Graham L. of Beckley, and Charles William of fort Thomas, Ky.; three daughters, Mrs. Ben Campbell of Cincinnati, Oh., Mrs. Lois Hoffman of Jeffersonville, In., and Mrs. Gloria May Pafford of Albuquerque, NM. and 12 grandchildren.  The body will be removed from Calfee Funeral Home to the residence at 11:00 am Wednesday.  Funeral services will be held at the Salvation Army Citadel at 312 South Fayette Street at 10:30 am Thursday with the Rev. James Neal will be in charge and also officiating will be Capt. J. R. Jones of the Charlottesville, Va. Salvation Army and Capt. L. E. Moore of the local Salvation Army Citadel.  Burial will be made in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Wytheville, Va

Esta Gunnoe Blevins

Esta Gunnoe Blevins, 99, of Heartland Nursing Facility, Beckley, formerly of Ridge Avenue, Beckley, died Wednesday, Feb 24, 1999, in the care facility following a long illness.  Born Oct 28, 1899, in Glomery, Dameron, she was the daughter of the late William Harrison and Mary Jane Clay Gunnoe.  Mrs Blevins was a soldier in the Salvation Army for more than 70 years and a Home League secretary.  She had been a resident of the area most of her entire life and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.  Mrs. Blevins was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Edward Blevins in April 1952; seven brothers and four sisters.  Survivors include a niece whom she raised, Linda Gunnoe of Mabscott; a granddaughter, Melissa Foley of Beckley; a grandson, William (David) Vaught, stationed with the US Navy in Florida; a great-granddaughter, Caitlyn Foley; a niece she partially raised, Lila Francisco of Beckley; and numerous other nieces and nephews.  Services will be 11:00 am Saturday at Calfee Funeral home Chapel, Beckley, with Captain Thomas W. Friddle officiating.  Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Methodist Church cemetery in Wytheville, Va.  Friends may call 6 to 9 pm today at the Calfee funeral home, Beckley.  Nephews will serve as pallbearers.  Donations of sympathy may be made to the Salvation Army, 312 South Fayette St., Beckley, WV 25802.  Arrangements by Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley.
