Dr. A. Allen Bliss

Dr. A. Allen Bliss, 83, of Pleasant Hills, Beckley, died 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Raleigh General Hospital of heart disease. Born May 12, 1917, in Grand Junction, Colo., he was the son of the late Archie D. and Nona Smith Bliss. Dr. Bliss was a prominent Beckley physician for more than 45 years and was of the Christian faith. He was a graduate of the University of Colorado and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He served his internship at Denver General Hospital. Dr. Bliss served with the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines. He also served in the U.S. Air Force and was the physician at the Armed Forces Examining and Induction Station in Beckley from 1951-1953. He was the company physician for Armco Steel at Montcoal, until opening private practice in Beckley in 1956. Dr. Bliss was a staff member at Raleigh General Hospital, and a member of the American Medical Association, Raleigh County and State Medical Societies, the Academy of Family Practice, the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Fraternity, the Phi Delta Theta Social Fraternity, Black Knight County Club and a former member of Fraternal Order of the Elks. Dr. Bliss retired from his practice in 1984. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nellie G. Barton of Boulder, Colo. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Dedee; a daughter, Candice A. Bliss of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a stepson, Reginald J. O'Neal and his wife, Sally, of Beckley; three grandsons, Cody Lynn Chapman, and Jeremy Allen Chapman of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Scott Ryan O'Neal of Beckley; and a step grandson, Kevin C. Maupin and wife, Jill, of Charleston. As requested there will be no visitation or service, Dr. Bliss will be cremated. Those who knew him will remember him as a wonderful physician and a kind, gentle man.
