Lela J. Lilly Bower

Lela J. Lilly Bower, 85, of Coal City, died Sunday, March 21, 1999 in a Beckley hospital following short illness. Born February 19, 1914, at Winding Gulf, she was the daughter of the late Douglas and Maude Lunsford Lilly. Mrs. Bower was a homemaker and a member of the Coal City Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Jimmy" Bower; a son, Clyde Vernon Bower; three brothers, Don Lilly, Arnold Lilly, and Orville Lilly, and two sisters, Aldina Bolen and Ruth Hudson. Survivors include a son, Von Bower and wife Carol, of Coal City; three daughters, Rosemary Thomas and her husband Jack, of Coal City, Barbara Helvey and her husband Vernon, of Covington, Va., Nora Keen and her husband Eddie, of Christiansburg, Va.; three brothers, Ray Lilly of Georgia, Sherman Lilly of Blountville, Tenn., and Lawrence Lilly of Beckley; two sisters, Venora Kerwood of Florida, and Elva Barker of Spotslvania, Va., 12 grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Services will be 11 a.m. today at Coal City Community Church, with the Revs. Jack Tankersley and Grayson Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends called 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, and may call one hour before the services today at the church. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Williams-Blue Ridge, Sophia.


Betty D. Bower

Betty D. Bower, 68, of 420 Old Crow Road, Beaver, died at 9:40 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2001, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness. Born March 22, 1933, at Glen Hedrick, she was the daughter of the late Guy and Alene Fern Morris Johnson. She was retired from Acme Supermarket in Beckley and attended Crow Christian Church. She lived most of her adult life in Maryland and had resided in the Crow area the past 15 years. She was preceded in death by a sister, Colleen Johnson; and a brother, Phillip Johnson. Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Martin Gilbert Bower Jr.; two brothers, Larry Johnson of Shady Spring and Roger Johnson of Crow; a sister, Shirley Underwood of Willoughby, Ohio; two nieces and a nephew who cared for her during her illness, Myra Sue Johnson of Beaver and Donna McDonald and Robert McDonald, both of Cool Ridge; and several other nieces and nephews. Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Dr. Charles Bethel officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Jack Lee Bryant, Roger Wayne Johnson, J.D. Hicks, Matthew Hicks, Jason Hicks and Kenneth Ratliff. Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.
