Obituaries for the Bruffey Family

Vivian L Bruffey

SCARBRO - Vivian Lively Bruffey, retired school teacher, died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 19, 2001, at her home following a long illness. She recently celebrated her 94th birthday. She was born June 11, 1907, at Scar-bro; she was the daughter of the late Emmett and Phyllis Scott Lively. Mrs. Bruffey spent her childhood at Red Star, and was the last survivor of her immediate family. She was a 1926 graduate of Mount Hope High School and also graduated from Concord College. Beginning a 40-year teaching career at Bragg School in Raleigh County, the remainder of her employment was in Fayette County teaching at Harvey, Glen Jean, Oak Hill Elementary schools and Collins Junior High School. Her late husband, Clarence M. Bruffey, also an educator, was a former principal at Collins High School. Mrs. Bruffey was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church and of the Donnelly Sunday School Class, the Fayette County Association of Retired School Employees, a former member of White Oak Country Club, and a former member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club. Her talents included quilting, sewing, gardening and canning. She enjoyed talking about her many years of teaching and her former students. Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Bruffey was preceded in death by her sisters, Lucille, Lois, Jane and Margaret; and her brothers, George and James. Survivors include nieces and nephews: John McKown of Newhall, Calif., Phyllis Jane McKown of Costa Mesa, Calif., Julia "Cookie" Dolan of Oxen Hill, Md., Kay Ballard VanHorn of Dover, Del., Anita Thomas of Chino Valley, Ariz., Joe Thomas of Claremont, Calif., James Lively of Johnstown, Pa., Geoffrey Lively of Windber, Pa., Lisa Woomer of Windber, Pa., and Joyce Lively of San Francisco, Calif. She is also survived by many cousins and friends living in the Oak Hill area. Her special caregivers were Patricia Deal, Sheila Donnally, Dreama Dotson and Pat Everette. Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Oak Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. David White officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Friends may call one hour before the service Wednesday at the church. Arrangements by Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill.
