Ivan Dale Burgess
GLEN ROGERS -- Ivan Dale Burgess, 42, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Jan. 2, 1957, in Charleston, he was the son of the late Earl E. and Sylvia Landers Burgess. Mr. Burgess spent his early childhood in Charleston moving to Glen Rogers in 1968. He was a 1975 graduate of Glen Rogers High School and was an employee of Mystic Energy at Wharton in Boone County. He was a member of the Glen Roger Community Church. In his spare time he enjoyed restoring cars, fishing, and going on outings with his family and many of the children in the community. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Lee Burgess and a nephew, Nathan Tweed. Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Charlotte Lester Burgess; two children, Ivan Dale "D.J." Burgess Jr. and Della Suzanne Burgess, both at home; six sisters, Geraldine Poore and her husband, Richard, of Statesville, N.C., Jewels Bails, of Glen Rogers, Rebecca Tweed and her husband, Nathan, of Cleveland, Ohio, Edna Farris and her husband, Jeff, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., June Bailey and her husband, Connie, of Fairdale, and Sandy Bailey and her husband, Anthony, of Fairdale; four brothers, Danny Burgess and his wife, Libby, of Forest, Va., Larry Burgess and his wife, Betty, of Glen Rogers, Billy Burgess of Hickory, N.C., and David Burgess and his wife, Aleshia, of Statesville, N.C.; and by a host of nephews and nieces. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Lee Swor and Rev. Harry Lafferty officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be nephews and friends. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley.
Leona M. Burgess
Leona M. Burgess, 73, of Glen Morgan, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Dec. 28, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Martin and Annie Huggins Martin. Ms. Burgess was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith. She was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Martin; three sisters, Katie Redden, Margie Martin and Stella Burgess; and a great-grandson, Dakota DeLong. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Mike T. Burgess; two sons, Tracy Burgess and Peter Burgess, both of Beaver; four daughters, Delores Keel and her husband, Roger, of Beaver, Susan Matherly and her husband, Larry, of Beaver, Anna Clark and her husband, Thomas, of Shady Spring and Mitzi Evans and her husband, Steven, of Beaver; a brother, Hermie Martin of Oak Hill; a sister, Bertha Murdock of Glen Morgan; six granddaughters, Tracie Matherly, Mary Matherly, Tara Hodges, Shala Knight, Shane Robertson and Courtney Evans; six grandsons, Larry Matherly Jr., Tracy Burgess III, Travis Burgess, Roderick Keel, Robert Keel and Thomas Clark II; and 10 great-grandchildren, Larry Matherly III, Zachary Matherly, Brianna Hodges, Cameron Hodges, Noah Hooper, Jacob Robertson, Dylan Keel, Braydon Knight, Orion Munoz and Garrett Burgess. Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with the Rev. Buzzy Keller officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Richard Hodges, Bobby Knight, Scott Robertson, Tony Savino, Oscar Munoz Jr. and Joey Pruitt. Hester Arnold Burgess
MOUNT HOPE - Hester Arnold Burgess, 85, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Hidden Valley Health Care Center, Oak Hill, following a lengthy illness. Born March 22, 1916, in Skelton, she was the daughter of the late Denver and Lena Mae Bailey Arnold. Mrs. Burgess was a former antique dealer at Burgess Antique Shop. She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Avrice K. "Buddy" Burgess; a sister, Edith Roberts; and a brother, Fred B. Arnold. Survivors include three sisters, Ruby Wolfe of Seivering, Fla., Doris Carlile of Lighthouse Point, Fla., and Marjorie Schapiro of Mount Hope; and several nieces and nephews, including Fred Arnold and his wife, Barbara, of Shady Spring and Linda Arnold and husband, John, of Charleston. Graveside rites and committal service will be noon Monday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with the Revs. Richard Allen and Ronnie Stapleton officiating. Interment will follow. Friends may call 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 129 Main St., Beckley. Virgil Winston Burgess
OAK HILL - Virgil Winston Burgess, 87, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at his home following a long period of declining health. Born Aug. 29, 1914, at Pea Ridge, Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Jacob Patrick and Ada Mae Brooks Burgess. Mr. Burgess was a retired mine inspector for Berwind Land Co., Charleston, with 37 years' service. He was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church where he attended the Men's Bible Class and was a church trustee. Mr. Burgess was a member and past master of the Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 A.F. and A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies K.C.C.H., Charleston, Beni Kedem Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., Charleston, Fayette County Shrine Club, Oak Hill Chapter No. 107 O.E.S., Oak Hill Lions Club and Oak Hill Garden Club. He served as chairman of the board for the Arbuckle PSD and on the Board of Governors for Alderson-Broaddus College. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in World War II on Iwo Jima. Survivors include his wife, Alice Spitler Burgess; two sons, Dr. Thomas P. Burgess and his wife, Gloria C., of Bridgewater, Va., and Dr. Phillip E. Burgess of Salisbury, N.C.; a daughter, Beverly Conner and her husband, Dr. R. Kim Conner, of Birmingham, Ala.; and two grandchildren, Shawn Patrick and Katherine Elizabeth Conner of Birmingham. Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. William Slates officiating. Interment will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, and one hour before service at the church. Memorials may be made to Food Pantry, Oak Hill United Methodist Church, 250 Main St. E., Oak Hill, WV 25901. Military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 3110, Oak Hill.
