Obituaries for the Cottle Family

Lelia S. Cottle

Lelia Sweeney Cottle, 85, of Beckley, died of natural causes Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in a Beckley hospital. Born July 13, 1913, at Ghent, she was the daughter of the late L.D. and Esta Williams Sweeney. Mrs. Cottle was a graduate of Shady Spring High School, where she served as class president, and later graduated from Concord College. She began her teaching career at age 19 at Lowgap, near Ghent, and finished her 35-year teaching career at Prosperity and Sylvia schools. She was a member of the United Methodist Temple, Beckley, and was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Ross Cottle; and a sister, Joy Hale. Survivors include a sister, Vera Applegate of Ghent; three sons, C. Ross "Buddy" Cottle Jr. of Daniels, Eddie Joe Cottle of Grandview and Jack Dee Cottle of Beaver; two brothers, Lonnie Sweeney of Beckley and Alvin Sweeney of Florida; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Daniel B. Johnson and the Rev. Ellen L. File officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum B, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley. Pallbearers will be Billy Cole, Frank Pack, Mark Cottle, Kevin Cottle, Harold Williams, and Basil Shrewsberry, and also Roger Lilly and Lawrence Berkel. Arrangements by Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley.
