Elza 'PeeWee' Crowder
Elza Raymond "PeeWee" Crowder, 86, of Clear Creek Road, Beckley, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at his home following a long illness. Born Aug. 5, 1914, in Ronceverte, he was the son of the late William George and Rosie Collins Crowder and stepfather Jim Humphrey. Mr. Crowder, after being injured in a mining accident in the early '40s, and a long recovery, worked as a school bus driver, hauled coal and timber. He also operated a bulldozer for West Construction for more than 20 years before his retirement. He enjoyed coon hunting, deer hunting and farmed his entire life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hessie Williams Crowder; a daughter, Georgia Jewell; two brothers, George and Everette Crowder; and five sisters, Mary Wilson, Willie Hunter, Annie Aranio, Lakie Ervin and Rose Crowder. Mr. Crowder was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors include three daughters, Cindy Aust and her husband, Gene, and Margaret Collins and her husband, Johnny, all of Clear Creek Road, and Mable Williams and her husband, Riley, of Maple Fork Road; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Mount Hope, with the Rev. Jerry Tyree officiating. Entombment will follow in Sam Davis Cemetery, Maple Fork. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope.
Gladys 'Polly' Crowder
Gladys "Polly" Crowder, 74, of Beckley, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, in a Charleston hospital following a long illness. Born Aug. 29, 1926, in Charleston, she was the daughter of the late William O. and Maggie Barnett Stevens. Mrs. Crowder worked for State Farm Insurance, was a member of Church of the Nazarene, Johnstown Road, Beckley, and a member of Senior Friends and The Shepherd Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Clarence Crowder; a grandson, Richard Wayne Miller; two brothers, Ottie and Clarence Stevens; and two sisters, Thelma Diamond and Nellie Beck. Survivors include a son, James Larry Crowder and his wife, Leslie, of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; two daughters, Sharon Ann Gilly and her husband, Jim, of Roscoe, Ill., and Susan Gail Miller of Beckley; six grandchildren, Paul, Trace and Lee Crowder, Travis Gilly, April Sandborn and Chris Miller; a brother, Clinton Stevens of Indianapolis; six sisters, Beulah Jane Thomas of Indianapolis, Lucy Maxine Henman of Missouri, Mildred Holstein of Indianapolis, Phyllis Knapp of Charleston and Shirley Stevens of Charleston; and seven great-grandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Revs. Brian Pope and John Pritchard officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Grandsons and family will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.
