Lavilla V. Curtis
Lavilla Violet Cox Curtis, 87, formerly of Skelton, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, following a short illness. Born Sept. 1, 1913, in Raleigh, she was the daughter of the late John Lewis and Cora Martin Cox. Ms. Curtis was a retired nurse. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Curtis; two sisters, Edith Cox, Peggy Cox; two brothers, Aubrey and John Cox. Survivors include two brothers, Robert Cox of El Cajon, Calif., and Kenyon Cox of Wichita Falls, Texas; a sister, Beaulah Hudson of Philadelphia, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. Private services will be held for family members. Arrangements by Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.
Laura J Curtis
Laura J. Acord Curtis, 87, of the Oak Grove community, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, after a long and full life. Born Sept. 9, 1913, in Bolt, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Dellie Calloway Acord. Mrs. Curtis spent her childhood in Bolt. She was a lifetime resident of the Oak Grove community where she was an active lifetime member of Oak Grove Christian Church. She will be remembered by her family as a devoted wife and mother, a loving grandmother and great-grandmother, and a sweet mother-in-law. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, James Ross Curtis; a sister, Ollie Richmond; five brothers, Ira, Ward, Lacey, Walter and Clayton Acord; and a son-in-law, John L. Jones Jr. Survivors include a daughter, Betty L. Jones of Beckley; a son, James Darrell Curtis and his wife, Helen, of Elizabethton, Tenn.; a brother, Cleat Acord of Beckley; a sister, Hattie Jenny of Beckley; seven grandchildren, John K. Jones, Cindy Miller, Sandi Friend, Mike Curtis, Jeff Curtis, Rusty Curtis and Rhonda Pritt; 10 great-grandchildren, Chris Jones, Mandy Miller, Justin Friend, Dylan Curtis, Ben Curtis, Jeremy Curtis, Dustin Curtis, Ashley Curtis, Will Curtis and Peyton Curtis; many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Virginia "Jenny" Rice; two special friends, Billie Jo and Cherly Muovich; and the many care givers at Heartland. Service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Oak Grove Christian Church with Pastors Ken Overdorf and Sheldon Cosma officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call 1:30 p.m. until time of service Sunday at the church. Pallbearers will be Richard Rice, Dane and Scott Jenny, John K. Jones, Greg Mahaffey and John F. Friend. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley.
