ELKTON, Va. - William Earnest Adkins, 78, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, Va. He had been ill the past seven months. Born July 20, 1922, in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Earnest and Bessie Vandall Adkins. Mr. Adkins was employed by Valley Camp Coal Co. for 18 years and moved to Elkton about 25 years ago, and was a former member of the Beckley Moose. On July 29, 1952, he married Ethel Emily Donelow, who survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Penny Dove of Massanutten, Va.; a stepson, James Ratliff of Viper, Ky.; a brother, Wilbert Adkins of Piney View; a half brother, Wilson Gill of Stanaford; two sisters, Jo Ann Atkins of Piney View and Delphine Shuck of Layland; and two grandchildren. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Me-morial Gardens, Beckley, with Dr. Larry Halsey officiating.
