Thomas L. Atha, 81, of Sophia, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998 in a Charleston hospital following a long illness. Born March 27, 1919 in Fayette County, he was the son of the late Thomas Nathan and Wabie Ethel Harvy Atha. Mr. Atha was a construction worker, a member of AFCIO Local 483, a U.S. Army veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart in World War II. He attended Pierpoint Freewill Baptist. He was preceded in death by a sister, Cathran Boggs. Survivors include his wife, Maudie Payton Atha of Sophia; two sons, Steve Lee Atha of Beckley and Thomas Allen Atha of Sophia; a brother, Donald Ray Atha of Tennessee; a sister, Elizabeth Whitt of Norfolk, Va.; and two granddaughters, Cynthia Dawn and Jennifer Lynn Atha of Beckley. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Sophia. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Sophia/Midway VFW Post 4326 will conduct graveside rites.
