DOBSON, N.C. - William Homer "Bill" Blankenship, 75, formerly of Beckley, died Friday, June 4, 1999, in a Winston-Salem, N.C., hospital following a long illness. Born July 26, 1923, at Winding Gulf, he was the son of the late C.H. and Linda Amanda Jane Southern Blankenship. Mr. Blankenship was a retired coal miner, working 37 years in the coal industry. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in India. He was preceded in death by a daughter, two sisters and two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Roxie Thompson Blankenship; two sons, Bobby Blankenship and his wife, Robin, of Beckley and Rex Blankenship and his wife, Denita, of Lexington, S.C.; three daughters, Patty Hayes and her husband, Chuck, of Meadow Bridge, Becky Keith and her husband, Jimmy, of Oxford, N.C., and Judy Richardson of Dobson; a brother, Harold Blankenship of Beckley; his stepmother, Ethel Blankenship of Beckley; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a multitude of family and friends. Services will be 1 p.m. today at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Cody Harmon Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call one hour before services at the funeral home. Sophia-Midway VFW Post No. 4326 will conduct military graveside rites. Cody Jr., Gilbert and Robert Harmon, Joe and Carlton Lowe and Michael Blankenship will serve as pallbearers. Charlie, Robert and Clayton Blankenship and Gary, Michael and William Hayes will serve as honorary pallbearers. Arrangements by Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.
