PATTERSON, N.C. - Howard "Dutch" Canterbury, 72, formerly of Summers County, died Friday, July 6, 2001, following a long illness. Born April 23, 1929, at Ingram Branch, Raleigh County, he was the son of the late Roy and Faye Wickline Canterbury of Lowell. He was of the Baptist faith, and retired from Great Lakes Carbon Co. in Morganton, N.C., and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served his country in the Korean War. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Canterbury and an infant brother, Paul Canterbury. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Jane Bower Erskine Canterbury; three sons, Richard, Robert and Darrell Canterbury of Granite Falls, N.C.; three stepsons, William Erskine Jr. of Morganton, N.C., Roger Erskine of Jumping Branch and Jackie Erskine of Nebo, N.C.; three stepgranddaughters, Carol Wencel of Roxboro, N.C., and Lola Cowick and Patsy Erskine, both of Patterson; a brother, Kenneth Canterbury of Rainelle; a sister, Oma May Lyall of Pence Springs; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Service will be 2 p.m. today at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Bill Fox officiating. Burial will follow in Keller Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lowell.
