Parthena Clay Pendry, 95, of Crab Orchard left this earthly land July 7, 2001, at 10:40 p.m. She was born to William Barrett and Penelope Milam Clay at Saulsville March 27, 1906. She was the last surviving member of her family of three sisters and three brothers. She was the widow of Lacy W. Pendry. Parthena was a devoted member of the Bible Baptist Church of Sophia, and a former member of the Hilltop Baptist Church of Crab Orchard. She had attended Milam High School at McGraws, Wyoming County, and often told of her experiences while in school. She rode a horse to and from school so she could play basketball, and having to ride the trains when playing games away from her home school. She still enjoyed watching basketball games on television. Also, she prided in the number of jars of food she preserved from the family garden each summer. Parthena is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline "Jackie" Meadows of Crab Orchard; a son, Melvin H. Pendry and wife Joann of Beckley; five grandchildren, Donald W. Meadows and wife Brenda of Delaplane, Va., Sarita Beckett and husband Dean of Crab Orchard, Rodney Pendry and wife Crystal of Brick, N.J., Barry Pendry and wife Joy of Sandersville, Ga., and Dale Pendry and wife Patty of Valencia, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Donald W. Meadows Jr. and wife Anita of Lake Charles, La., Erica Meadows of San Diego, Calif., Jocelyn and Justine Beckett of Crab Orchard, Will Pendry of Brick, N.J., Greyson and Audra Pen-dry of Valencia, Calif., and William Blatt of Sandersville, Ga.; great-great-grandchildren, Donald W. Meadows II and Autumn Meadows of Lake Charles, La. Also survived by her compassionate care giver for many years, Lucille Mills, and dear friend, Mary Lilly. Pallbearers will be Dean Beckett, Don Meadows, Phillip Bond, Bob Lilly, Ben Bane, Bob Cook, Frank Pendry, and Brad Bane. Funeral services will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Parlor on July 10, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne Holder and Dr. Bruce Cannon officiating, with a one-hour visitation prior to service.
