Robert 'Bob' Darby


Robert "Bob" Edward Darby, 76, of 217 Tolley Drive, Maxwell Hill, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, in a Morgantown hospital following a long illness. Born May 29, 1924, at Edwight, he was the son of the late Vernon and Minnie Taylor Darby. Mr. Darby spent his childhood at Edwight. He was a retired maintenance foreman having last worked at War Eagle Coal Co. in Bolt. He had 39 years of service in the mining industry. A resident of Beckley since 1960, he was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a member of the BYKOTA (Be Ye Kind One To Another) Sunday School Class. Mr. Darby served the U.S. Navy in World War ll in the South Pacific as a Seabee. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, yard work, woodworking and being with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Earl Lilly, in 1976; and a brother, William Darby, in 1962. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Ann Mankin Darby; a daughter, Beverly Lilly and her husband, David, of Beckley; a son, Robert Mark Darby and his wife, Elaine, of Cary, N.C.; four grandchildren, Angela Lilly and her fiance, Tyler King, David Lilly II, Becky Darby, and Michael Darby; a brother, Dick Darby of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three sisters, Patty Workman and her husband, Tommy, of Addison, Texas, Betty Cantley of Barboursville, and Dotty Arthur and her husband, Foster, of Liberty. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with a friend of the family, Mike Darby, officiating. Entombment will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley. Friends may call one hour before the service Tuesday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at their residence from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Pallbearers include Ira Richmond, Azel Farley Jr., Ernest Durham, David Lilly, David Lilly ll, and Roger Clark. Honorary pallbearers will be Deen Thurman, Kevin Darby and John Childress. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley.
