LAUREL, Md. - Ernestine Tompkins Davis, 68, formerly of Ames Heights, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Feb. 17, 1931, at Elmo, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas Tompkins and Willie Clifton Sweet Tompkins. Ms. Davis was a retired operator for C&P Telephone Co. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Lee Davis. Survivors include her stepmother, Margaret Tompkins of Fort Benning, Ga.; three sons, Irvin Lee Davis Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Bladensburg, Md., Dale Allen Davis and his wife, Debra, of Wilmington, N.C., and William Eugene Davis of Laurel, Md.; a daughter, Terry Elizabeth Hafford of Boston; a sister, Maxine Shuff of Ames Heights; three stepbrothers, Marshal Tompkins of Wilmington, Del., Donald Tompkins of Lincolnton, N.C., and Johnny Tompkins of Fort Benning; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Paul Gene Syner officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Brentwood, Md.
