Jesse W. Durham, 85, of Beckley, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Nov. 17, 1913, in Summers County, he was the son of the late George and Sophrona Houchins Durham. Mr. Durham was a retired coal miner, working for 43 years, last employed at Westmoreland Coal Co. He was a member of the UMWA Local 8152 and a member of the Hotchkiss Church of God. He was preceded in death by five brothers; three sisters; and three grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ratha J. Rice Durham; two sons, Gene Durham and his companion, Jewel, of Glen White, and Daniel Durham of Hickory, N.C.; five daughters, Joann Martin and her husband, Randall, of Beckley, Martha Williams of Beckley, Lila Upchurch and her husband, Raymond, of Daniels, Sandra Smale and her husband, Jim, of Bangor, Pa., and Yvonne Wilson and her husband, Robert, of Slab Fork; two sisters, Broaddus Scarberry and Gladys Newbourne, both of Beckley; 30 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. John R. Pack and the Rev. David Wall officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers. There will be a family supper at Hotchkiss Church of God at 3:30 p.m. Friday after the service.
