Lloyd "Bernard" Edwards, 87, of Sophia, departed this life Wednesday, July 28, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Aug. 14, 1911, at Blake in Mercer County, he was the son of the late John and Mary Rich-ards Edwards. Mr. Edwards was a lifetime resident of Sophia, and a member of the Sophia Baptist Church. He was a retired coal miner and had more than 40 years of service with Slab Fork Coal Co. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Edwards; and a sister, Gladys Edwards. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Wallace Edwards; two sons, Walter Edwards and his wife, Kay, of Westminster, Calif., and George Edwards and his wife, Judy, of Sophia; four daughters, Shirley Pannell and her husband, Charles, of Ravenswood, Peggy Small of Mabscott, Virginia "Lovie" Sweeney and her husband, Gordon, of Sweeneysburg and Carolyn Brown and her husband, Donnie, of Crab Orchard; a brother, John Edwards Jr. of Crab Orchard; three sisters, Nannie Stollings of Danville, Mae Rakes of Sophia and Sadie Anderson; his best friend, Donald Stone of Sophia; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Sophia First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Mundy officiating. Burial will follow in Hot Coal Cemetery, Coal City. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, and one hour before the services Friday at the church. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
