Effie M. Rakes, 93, of Beaver, formerly of Conway Street, Beckley, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at a Beckley area hospital following a short illness. Born April 13, 1907, at Cabin Creek, she was the daughter of the late Harrison W. and Ida Blankenship Roach. Mrs. Rakes was a homemaker and attended Madeline Freewill Baptist, Amigo. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Luke Graham; her second husband, Curtis Rakes; two sons, Wiley Donald Graham and William Graham; and three daughters, Thelma Graham, Shelby Graham and Alma Reed Stringfield. Survivors include two sons, Wesley Ronald Graham of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Willis Luke Graham of Athens; six daughters, Geneva Slavely and her husband, Bill, of Beckley, Freda Cline of Helen, Pauline Smith of Beckley, Ida Reed of Besoco, Grace Wiley of Indianapolis and Margarette Buckland and her husband, Dallas, of Blue Jay; three stepsons, Curtis Rakes of Georgia, Clarence Rakes of Virginia and Kenneth Rakes of Virginia; 40 grandchildren, 44 greatgrandchildren and numerous greatgreatgrandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Allen Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
