Andrew Biggs And Susannah Godbey

Virginia and West Virginia are two states rich in American history. My ancestors were part of that History. I would like to pass along the information and photos that I have gathered on the following families so that others may find their missing link in the jigsaw puzzle of genealogy.
The boundaries of early Virginia were constantly changing. The counties of Virginia were also under reorganization. You will see several Va. Counties listed for the early findings on the Biggs and Godbey families. In my research I discovered the families did not move it was the boundaries.
My research shows Pulaski County was formed on March 30, 1839 by an act of the General Assembly of Va. The county was named after the Polish Count Pulaski and was taken from parts of Montgomery and Wythe counties.
Floyd County was formed out of part of Montgomery County in 1831.
Andrew Jackson Biggs was born on December 10, 1810 in Montgomery County Va. . Andrew married Susannah Lewis Godbey, born May 11, 1813 in Va. I believe she was born in Montgomery County Va. The birth dates and marriage date was information passed along to me.
They were married on March 15, 1830. The county most likely Montgomery,Va. In the 1840 Pulaski County Va. Census I found Andrew Biggs listed with a total of 8 living in the household. Andrew and Susannah had ten children that I am aware of.
Information passed on to me also lists the family in the 1850 Pulaski County census. Household #373. The Biggs family moved to what is now the Raleigh County West VA area in the mid 1850ís, purchasing land from the Baileys.
I found the following spellings for Susannah, Susan Ann ,Susanah. Godbey or Godby. Andrew also was known as Andy.
Children of Andrew and Susannah Biggs
Harriet Jane. B- abt. 1833 in Floyd County Va. She married John E. F. Miller in Raleigh County West Va. on April 28,1857. John was born Abt. 1833 in Philadelphia Pa. His parents were Benjamin F. and Harriet. John was a Farmer. John is buried in an unmarked grave alongside his son Thomas E. Miller in the Biggs Cemetery located in the James crest Housing Development on Dry Hill in Raleigh County West Va.
Maranda or Amanda. B-abt 1835 or 1836 Floyd County Va. In the1860 Raleigh County Census she is listed as 24 and a spinster.
Rezin G. or Reason also known as Reed. B- December 26, 1837 Floyd Co. Va. He married Virginia C. Windsor in Fayette County Va. on Feb. 15, 1867. Virginia was born April 3, 1847 in Fayette County Va. Reason is listed in the 1860 Raleigh County census as Reason G., laborer, and age 22. He lived with his family. In the 1870 Raleigh County census he is listed as Reed age 30, a farmer married to Virginia a housekeeper. By 1880 they had 7 children. I believe Virginia died in 1900. Death records show a Mrs. Reed Biggs died March 6 ,1900, age 50 , American, Place of death Prosperity, she was ill for five days with Pneumonia and fever. G.W.Gibbs was the undertaker in Beckley. Information passed to me says Virginia is buried in the Biggs Cemetery. Reason G. is listed in the1900 Raleigh census as widowed. He is listed in the 1920 Raleigh census on Quinnomont Rd. Rezin G. Biggs served in the Civil War. His headstone states he died Jan. 18 1925. He is buried in the Biggs cemetery on Dry Hill Rd. in Raleigh Co. West Va. I found an R.C.Bigg listed in the death records for the year 1924. Jan. 18, line 9, he was 87 and a widower he died, in Sprague, Raleigh County West Va .
William Columbus. B- 1840 Pulaski Va. William served in the Civil War. He died Feb.15, 1862 at FT. Donelson in Tennessee. Sources National Archives, Record Group 109. Complied Service Records of Confederate Soldiers who served in organizations from the State of West Va. 36 Infantry, Enlisted men in Raleigh County. Biggs William C., KI A, Ft. Donelson, Killed in action.
Harmon E. B- Sept. 1842 Pulaski Co. Va. According to the1900 Raleigh County West Va. census Harmon was 57 and married to a Mary R. or a Mary A. . Mary was 54 and they had 5 children. In the year 1878 three of their children died in Raleigh County of diptheria. William J., d-Sept 17,age 9yrs.5 mos., Henry A., d-Sept. 21, age 7 yrs. 4 mos., Mollie E.,d-Sept.26, age 4 yrs. 2 mos. A son Columbus F. was born April 9 1878, a daughter Bertha born July 25, 1883. All of their children were born in Raleigh County West Va.
Gordon Boyd. B- abt. 1845 Pulaski County Va. Gordon married Mary A. Stover in Raleigh County, West Va. on April 24, 1870. Mary was born in Roanake County Va. abt1844, her parents were Lewis R. and Harriet. Gordon and Mary had the following children Lawson b-July 1, 1871, Julia E b- Oct. 7, 1875 and a male born May 15 ,1877 in Raleigh County. In the Raleigh County deaths I found Susan E. Biggs died Nov. 27, 1879 age 6yrs. 2mos. 27 days, of Diptheria parents listed as Gordon B and Mary A. Mary A. ,25, died of consumption on June 22,1877 in Raleigh County. . Gordon married Nancy Catherine Summer on May 14, 1878 in Raleigh County. Nancy was born July 1854 in Floyd County Va. According to the 1900 Raleigh County census they had 13 children, 7 of them died... Nancy died of T.B. at age 70 on Sept 12, 1924 in Glen White, Raleigh County West Va. She was widowed. Gordon was a farmer and had served in the Civil War.
Chester Craig. B -August 1847 Pulaski County, Va. Married Martha E. Gray on April 11, 1870 in Raleigh County West Va. Martha was born in May 1853 in Pulaski County Va. Her parents were Harvey and Margaret. Martha E. died in Lanark, Raleigh County West Va. on Nov 21, 1926. She was widowed and died at the age of 75 of Pneumonia. In the 1900 Summers County Va. Census I found Chester and Martha in the Jumping Branch District. They had been married for 31 years and had 7 children, 1 had died. McNeal born 1871 Raleigh County West Va. Harmon M, born1873 in Trap Hill, Raleigh County, Belle F., born 1876 Raleigh County, Margaret S. born 1881 Raleigh County, The census listed the following children Susan b-Oct., 1882, Lula b-Aug.,1884, Emma b-Sept 1886.
Rhoda E. B- abt 1852 to 1856 Pulaski County Va. Rhoda married Francis Gregory McNamer on Nov. 4, 1879 in Raleigh County West Va. Francis was 34 and he was born in Campbell County Va. Rhoda was listed as 23.
John F Watkins. B- abt. 1855 Pulaski county Va. Raleigh County Census 1860, J.F. Mathis or Watkins age 6, 1870 John F., age 15. I have found no other information in Raleigh County on John.
Andrew Jackson Wall {my descendant line on the Biggs side} Andrew was born October 12, 1859 in Raleigh County West Va. He spent his whole life in Raleigh County. Andrew married Fannie Chapman Godbey. Fannie was born 1853 in Pulaski Co. Va. Andrew married Fannie on Jan.18, 1881 in Raleigh County.
Andrew {Andy} and Susannah raised their family on the Biggs farm in what was referred to as Town District or Town and vicinity in the census records. Andrew was a farmer and a tanner his wife was the matron of the house. The area was rich in farmland; their neighbors were The Baileys and the Godbeys. Susan Ann Biggs died Feb 3, 1892 she was 78, 9 mos. and 22 days. Andy J Biggs died May 1, 1895 he was 84.
