John H. "Johnny" Gunther, 61, of 222 Glenn Ave., Beckley, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, in a Beckley hospital following an apparent heart attack. Born Aug. 21, 1937, at Mabscott, he was the son of the late Colo-nel Harry and Bessie Mitchell Gunther. Mr. Gunther was presently the owner and operator of Gunther's Bookkeeping and Tax Service on North Oakwood Avenue, Beckley. Mr. Gunther was formerly employed by the Carolina Supermarkets from 1955-1968, and was the former owner and operator of Gunther's Supermarkets in Beckley from 1969-1987. He was a 1955 graduate of the Mount Tabor Christian High School in 1955, and had spent his childhood at Mount Tabor. He was a member of the Beckley Church of God, South Kanawha Street, Beckley, and had been a Beckley resident for the past 30 years. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Gunther. Survivors include his wife of nearly 41 years, Hazel Wray Gunther; five children, twins, Elaine Lilly and her husband, Leon, of Cool Ridge and Sr. Master Sgt. John Dwayne Gunther and his wife, Staff Sgt. Maria, stationed at the Aviano Air Base, Italy, Mark Gunther and his wife, Lisa, of Beckley, Tonya Frame and her husband, Randall, of Maple Fork and Lydia Keeton and her husband, Tommy, of Beckley; two brothers, Charles H. Gunther and his wife, Lena, of MacArthur and Robert "Bob" Gunther of Mount Tabor; one sister, Janet Gravely and husband, Charles, of Beckley; two aunts, Louise Gravely of Beckley and Shirley Pettry of Mount Tabor; 11 grandchildren, Misty and Miranda Lilly, D.J. Gunther, Adrionna and Gloria Gunther, Phillip, Jonathan and Rachel Gunther, Kayla, Christy and Sarah Keeton. Services will be 2 p.m. today at the Beckley Church of God, 2213 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, with the Rev. F.D. Sexton officiating and eulogy by Bill Reese. Burial will follow at the Mount Tabor Cemetery. Friends called from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and may call one hour before services today at the church. Doff and C.E. Huffman, Vito Giambanco, Paul McGhee, David Fondale, Steve Modley, Terry Gunther and Keith Sexton will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.
