John D. Hughes, 75, of 120 Swain St., Beckley, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, in a Charleston hospital. Born Oct. 27, 1922, at Big Stick, he was the son of the late John A. Hughes and Nannie Ayer Hughes. Mr. Hughes was a World War II veteran, a retired coal miner and a member of the American Legion Post No. 70. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Beckley. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Martin Hughes of Beckley; a son, Robert Hughes and friend, Marie, of Beckley; a stepson, Alfred Martin and his wife, Karen, of Page; a stepdaughter, Mary Fultz and her husband, Joe; three sisters, Louise William of Oak Hill, Edith McGhee of Oak Hill, and Gladys Robinson of Oak Hill; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and friends and other relatives. Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Durgan Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Andrew J. Durgan Sr., Walter Leach, James Cox, and Fred T. Simms officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley. Friends may call one hour before the services Thursday at the funeral home. Arrangements by Durgan Funeral Home, Beckley.
