Carlos H. Lilly


Carlos H. Lilly, 91, of Coal City, died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness. Born April 22, 1910, in Ellison, he was the son of the late Elder Eli O. Lilly and Cora Clark Lilly. Mr. Lilly was a retired coal miner, having worked most of his life in the coal mines. He was a member of UMWA Local No. 7086. He had been a member of Little Vine Primitive Baptist Church, Beaver, since 1953 and had served as clerk of the church for many years as long as health would allow. He and his wife were devout Christian people. He shall be missed by everyone who knew him. He was a very loving and generous man. The Lilly family shall always be grateful, especially for the concern, devotion and dedication of Brenda Grayhonya, Diana Zeigler and Anna Merle Stanley, for their extended love, which has been a source of great comfort. Surviving Mr. Lilly is his wife since 1936, Cleo Vest Lilly, who now resides in a local nursing home. She is the daughter of the late Anderson and Amanda L. Cochran Vest. Mr. Lilly was also the brother to nine brothers and sisters, of whom one brother and three sisters have preceded him in death. They are Ralph L. Lilly, who died Aug. 20, 1982, Melinda J. Lilly Lane, who died April 20, 1985, and Glena M. Lilly Cox, who died Aug. 11, 1987. His surviving brothers and sisters are Elder Kenna E. Lilly and his wife, Stella Cox Lilly, of Beckley, Josiah L. Lilly of Cool Ridge, Kelso Lilly and his wife, Thelma, of Beckley, Judith A. Lilly Lane and her husband, John, of Cool Ridge and Lola Mae Lilly Thompson and her husband, David, of Orlando, Fla. Mr. Lilly's surviving nieces are Glenna M. Carter, Leatrice Conner, Frances Lane Patterson, Cora Lee Lilly, Mary Joe Matherly, Patricia Cook, Juanita Brakefield, Carol Woodcock and Diana Zeigler. Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapell, Beckley, with Elders Jerry McGrady and Lewis Lester officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Lilly's nephews serving as active pallbearers are Leslie and Eddie Cox, Arnyst L. Lilly, Dewey Lilly, Richard J. Vest, Clyde Vest and Gary Arthur. Serving as honorary pallbearers are his nephews Jack, Donald, Roger and Jerry Vest, Harold Lilly, Ralph Lilly Jr., Bobby Lilly, Gary Lane, Kenneth Kincaid, Barry Stanley and Kenneth Atkinson. His special friends Jimmy Grayhonya, Joe Owens and Dr. Joseph Golden will also serve as honorary pallbearers. Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley
