Ora Mae Shumate, 84, of Orchard Avenue, Beckley, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Oct. 30, 1917, in Abingdon, Va., she was the daughter of the late John Walker and Nannie Minton. Mrs. Shumate was a 45year resident of Orchard Avenue and a member of First Christian Church, Courthouse Square, Beckley, where she was a member of the Friendship Class. She worked for many years at Acme Supermarket, was a Brownie troop leader and volunteered her time to the sick in area hospitals. Mrs. Shumate was a member of the YMCA where she was active in the senior citizens exercise classes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Enoch Grat Shumate, on July 28, 1991; a daughter, Patricia Shumate Lamb; and several sisters and brothers. Survivors include her granddaughters, Lisa Lamb Henry of Alexandria, Va., and Cynthia Lamb Rogers and her husband, John, of Roanoke, Va.; and two sisters, Ruby Beheler of Salem, Va., and Beulah Johnson of Raleigh, N.C. Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Courthouse Square, Beckley, with the Rev. Russell F. Smith Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Melton Mortuary, Beckley, and one hour before service Friday at the church. Pallbearers will be Donald Cook, Eddie and Buford Crouch, Lloyd Sweeney, Hal Price, John Roger and Mike Metrick. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley.
