MATOAKA -- Oliver Martin Shrewsbury, 87, of Box 251, died Saturday, Feb. 20,1 999 in a Princeton hospital. Born June 20, 1911 at Basin, he was the son of the late Charlie and Amanda Mills Shrewsbury. Mr. Shrewsbury was a retired coal miner retiring from Kitchekan Coal Company, was a member of the U.M.W.A. Local 8780, and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Berlin, John, Howard, Mack and Leonard Shrewsbury; six sisters, Bertha Polk, Minta Graham, Fannie Shrewsbury, Jeannette Carroll, Ida Buchanon, and Gracie Blankenship; and a grandson, Larry Shrewsbury. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ethel Irene Graham Shrewsbury; four sons, Blaine Shrewsbury and his wife, Barbara of Nubbins Ridge, Spanishburg, Connie Shrewsbury and his wife, Elizabeth of Lashmeet, Arnett Shrewsbury of Matoaka, Darrel Shrewsbury and his wife, Paula of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two daughters, Letha Smith of Abita Springs, La. and Carol Proffitt and her husband, Larry of Camp Creek; two brothers, Gaylord Shrewsbury and Olen Shrewsbury both of Beckley; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home, 1612 Honaker Ave., Princeton, with the Rev. Ralph Calfee officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton. Friends may call 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
