Dempsey R. Smith, 70, of 4507 Pluto Road, Shady Spring, died 11:15 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness. Born March 13, 1931, at New, he was the son of the late Charles O. Smith Sr. and Flora Arthur Smith. Mr. Smith was a lineman for a Virginia firm, a foreman for Hercules in Covington, Va., and he retired from the state of West Virginia. He was a graduate of Richmond High School and attended Beckley College. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving four years in Texas and was a member of the DAV. He was a loving husband and father. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Sebird Smith and Robert Noel Smith; and a sister, Louella Goodson. Survivors include his wife of 491/2 years, Norman "Jean" Bailey Smith; two sons, Dempsey Glenn Smith and wife, Lisa, of Easton, Pa., and Jerry Lynn Smith of Shady Spring; a daughter, Deborah Elaine Mink and husband, Daniel Christopher, of Beckley; a brother, C.O. Smith Jr. and wife, Norma, of Beckley; four sisters, Juanita Fitzgerald of Orlando, Fla., Eileen Mann of Daniels, June Westfall and husband, Buster, of Hinton and Marie Richmond and husband, Billy, of Beckley; grandchildren, Angela Beth Garcia, Mark Gregory Garcia, Joshua Glenn Smith, Sara Lauryn Smith and Corey Lynn Smith; and several nieces and nephews. Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel with Pastor Mark Schrade officiating. Burial will follow in New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery at Abraham. A private visitation for family only will be one hour before the services. Family members will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.
