CECILTON, Md. -- Samuel J. Smith Sr., 65, of 236 Main Street, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, in a Chestertown, Md. care center following an apparent heart attack. Born in Marfrance, he was the son of the late Frank and Gussie Smith. Mr. Smith worked for General Motors Corporation as an assemblyman in their Newport plant for 31 years, retiring in 1992. He enjoyed fixing things and was known as a handyman. His hobbies included gardening and listening to and watching the Baltimore Orioles. He was preceded in death by a sister, Shannon Meadows in 1997. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Peggy A. Smith; three daughters, Pamela Hanifee of Cecilton, Md., Rita Lloyd of Galena, Md. and Vicky Clymer of Townsend, Del.; three sons, Sam Smith Jr. and Timothy Smith, both of Galena and Jesse Smith of Earleville, Md.; a brother, Frank Smith of Newark, Del.; five sisters, Tommie Futch of Swanton, Md., Sue Ann Hylton, Cassandra Veppert and Karen Boyce, all of Ohio and Marry Lu Nugen of Arizona and 11 grandchildren. Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at St. Pauls United Methodist Church, Earleville, Md. Interment will be private. Friends may call one hour before the services at the church. In lieu of flowers, family requests contributions be made to the St. Pauls United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 129, Earleville, MD 21919.
