PRUDENCE - Estel Smith, 72, formerly of Thurmond, died Friday, July 13, 2001, in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a long illness. Born March 15, 1929, in Odd, he was the son of the late William and Ada Kelly Smith. Mr. Smith was a retired brakeman for CSX Railroad, a member of the United Transportation Union (Railroad) and attended Pentecostal Holiness Church, Garten. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy and Okey Smith; two sisters, Martha Wilburn and Mary Humphery; and an infant daughter, Connie Smith. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Smith; four sons, Dalford Smith of Prudence, Jerry Smith and his wife, Sandy, of Oak Hill, Harold Smith and his wife, Bonnie, of Harvey, and Gary Smith and wife, Sharon, of Maple Fork; seven grandchildren, Bonnie "Jeanie" Smith, David Smith, Wendi Smith, Tera Smith, Becky Smith, Jerry W. Smith Jr. and Kimberly Crist; four great-grandchildren, Antoni Pogorelski, Aaron Crist, Samantha Crist and Cameron Smith; and two sisters, Tressie Humphrey of Scarbro and Margie Humphrey of Cleveland. Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Pastor Larry Humphery officiating. Burial will be at Hilltop Cemetery.
