OCEANA - Thomas H. Smith, 89, passed away at home Saturday, July 14, 2001. Born Oct. 29, 1911, at Goodwill, he was the son of the late Jessie Mae Caldwell and P.C. Smith. Mr. Smith attended Bluefield College and served in Army Air Corps in the Pacific during World War II. He served as Wyoming County commissioner, was a self-employed merchant in Oceana for 25 years, a member of Oceana United Methodist Church and Rotary International, and he organized the first Boy Scout troop in Oceana and served scoutmaster for many years. He enjoyed playing baseball and worked with Little League teams in Oceana. His favorite hobbies were gardening and reading. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Lees; and a brother, Morris Smith. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Virginia Cook Smith; three sons, Thomas H. Smith Jr. of Beckley, Paul Douglas and his wife, Chris, of Chicago and John Eric Smith of Oceana; two grandchildren, Wayne Thomas and Megan Kate Smith of Beckley; two brothers, Curtis Smith of Verona, Va., and John Smith of Lacanto, Fla.; four sisters, Lucille Kirkman of Blaksbury, Va., Willie Mae Chakeres of Landsan, Ohio, Patty Looney of Garden City, Mich., and Elizabeth Mitchem of South Salem, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Oceana United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Vineyard officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
