Maxine A. Steele


Maxine Almond Steele, 68, of 102 Catlett St., Beckley, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at her home following a long illness. Born Sept. 18, 1932, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Carl T. and Emma Mae Neely Lilly. Mrs. Steele was a lifelong resident of Beckley and was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse with more than 20 years of service, having last worked for the Beckley Veterans Administration Medical Center. She was a member of the Old Grove Chapel. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frederick Lee Almond; her second husband, Gene H. Steele; two sisters, Jane Saul and Anna Ruth Smith; and a brother, Robert Franklin Lilly. Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Jane Almond of Beckley, with whom she made her home; a brother, Carlos H. Lilly and his wife, Doris, of Moorehead City, N.C.; and special friends, Margo Smith, Nancy Kessinger, Kenny Trent and Missy the Kitty. Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with the Rev. Johnny McGee officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
