Doris Wilma Holmes Webb, 78, of the Dry Hill community, Beckley, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at her home after a long illness. Born Jan. 7, 1921, in Graham, N.C., she was the daughter of the late George and Fannie Thompson Holmes. Mrs. Webb spent her childhood in Graham, N.C., and moved to the Sundial area in 1945, settling in Naoma in 1949, where she lived for 33 years before coming to the Beckley area. She was a graduate of High Point College earning a bachelor's degree in teaching, and she did post graduate work at Marshall University and West Virginia University. Mrs. Webb was a teacher at Marsh Fork High School, teaching English and psychology for 43 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Rebekah Chapel at Rock Creek and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Whites-ville Chapter. In her leisure time she enjoyed working with ceramics, having also taught classes in ceramics. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Webb in July 11, 1986. Survivors include a son, George Webb and his wife, Martha, of Beckley; three brothers, George W. Holmes III of Charlottesville, Va., William Holmes of Chico, Calif., and Herbert A. Holmes Jr. of Graham, N.C. Services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Samuel Vance and the Rev. J.D. Pettry officiating. Burial will follow in the Miller Cemetery, Rock Creek. Friends may call after 2 p.m. until time of the services Friday at the funeral home. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
