Uriah GANDEE b. Monongahela Valley among its earliest settlers. Those with
that family name are found among the Indian Fighters & defenders of the
settlements. Uriah m. Massie (Mercy), d/o Jesse & Grace (TANNER) HUGHES,
of the fame of scout, guide & Indian slayer; hero of historians of Border
Warfare by Withers & Border Settlers of NW Virginia by McWHORTER.
Uriah & Massie (HUGHES) GANDEE came to upper Pocatalico & made
their home on the Kanawhas about 1823. They first settled on the western side
of the Ohio river on "Old Town Flats" where their eldest son William
(Captain William GANDEE) was b. 1813; & arrived at Gandeeville when he was
13. Grace, Massie's mother, came here after the death of Jesse HUGHES which
occurred near Ravenswood in 1829 & lived with Uriah & Massie until her
death.
There is much speculation as to whether Massie or her sister Martha was
that daughter of Jesse HUGHES that was captured by Indians at her home on
Hacker's Creek 1787 & carried away & kept on the Indian camps on
Sandusky Plains where she was surrended to Jesse HUGHES after the treaty of
Fort Harmar 9 JAN 1789.
