JOHN AHERN

Venerable Railroad Man of Grafton Dies

John Ahern died Tuesday morning at his home after a very brief illness since Friday evening. He was one of Grafton's oldest citizens and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. A native of Ireland, he came to this country at the early age of ten and settled in Chillicothe, Ohio, where he commenced work as a boiler maker and continued in that occupation continuously for over fifty years, most of which time he worked and lived in Grafton.

In the year 1860, he and Mrs. Ahern, whose maiden name was Nagle, were married. They resided happily together and had two sons, one of whom died a few years ago. The surviving son, John H. Ahern, resides in New London, Canada. One sister also survives, being Mary Regan, of Lowell, Mass. All his other eight brothers and sisters have died. An adopted daughter, Mrs. William F. Faust, also survives, and has made her home with and cared for the comforts of her aged foster parents almost continuously for many years past.

The funeral took place this morning at the Catholic church where a large number of people gathered as a last mark of respect to the deceased and where the pastor, Father McElligott, said the solemn Mass and offices for the dead and paid a fitting tribute to the truly Christian life of the deceased. After the services, the remains were buried in Mt. Cavalry cemetery with undertaker McCabe in charge.
