Our building was built in 1908 to serve all of Tyler County as an
educational institution. It is unique in that it was the First
County High School in the state of West Virginia.
Our building served the community as Tyler County High School
from the Fall of 1908 until the Fall of 1993.
In the Fall of 1994 the Tyler County Heritage & Historical
Society acquired Tyler County High School from the Tyler County
Board of Education and established a museum to preserve the history
of this nationally registered landmark located in Middlebourne, West
Virginia.
It is a place to preserve our individual, local and state
history.
In the early spring of 1995 the Society began the restoration and
refurbishing of the old school building, turning it into the new
Tyler County Museum. On August 26 the museum opened to the public
with a grand celebration.
The Museum has 16 interesting rooms of historic relics and
documents, such as: a Civil War diary, seats from Sistersville's
Opera House, sheepskin documents which date back into the 1700's and
an old steamer trunk and a rope bed from the 1800's era.
The Museum houses a counter Gift Shop with many lovely and unique
crafts made by Tyler Countians; a Genealogy Department, with lots of
family histories; a Farm & Industry Room stocked full of antique
tools; an early 1800's Church Room; a Veterans Room that reflects
our men in combat; a complete Boy Scout Room and a Tyler County High
School Alumni Room in which they have Yearbooks, Class Pictures and
etc. that date back to yesteryears when the students were young and
prices were affordable.
