Albert Wilks his wife, Florida Elswick, son Frank and daughter Nellie in about 1918. They lived in Logan County off and on until Albert was killed in a fall from a slate dump on March 20,1924 at the Buffalo Eagle Colliery at Braeholm,W.Va . Albert was born May 15, 1896.
He is buried in the McGinnis Cemetery at Dickson, W.Va. His wife died on February 24, 1924 from complications of childbirth. Their daughter Nellie is my mother. She and the other children were raised by Florida's sisters in Lawrence County, Ky. Albert and Florida had 5 children Frank 1915, Nellie 1917, Ernest 1919, James 1921 and Pauline 1924. When I recieved Alberts death report from Bureau of Mines, I was more than surprised at the number of miners killed that year. It is no wonder that someone had to do something about the safety and working conditions of the miners.
