Jason Matthew Atkins
Jason Matthew Atkins, 25, of 112 Shaw Branch Road, Foster, died Monday, April 5, 2010, in a mining accident at Performance Coal Company.
Jason was born September 19, 1984, in Charleston, the son of Robert and Shereen Bowles Atkins of Racine.
He was an employee of Performance Coal Company, Montcoal, and a member of the Racine Volunteer Fire Department. Jason was a 2003 graduate of Sherman High School, where he was a member of the first team on the All-State Football Team and a special honorable mention on the All-State Baseball Team. Jason also attended West Virginia Institute of Technology, where he played baseball. He was an avid WVU sports fan and enjoyed playing golf with his brother. Jason loved life, his family and his truck and was always a happy person who cared for everyone else first.
Jason was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Michael Craft; and by his maternal great-grandfather, Cecil Cantley.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Amanda Withers Atkins of Foster, whom he married June 28, 2008. Jason and Amanda would have been together for 10 years on April 8, 2010. He was a loving husband and her best friend. They did everything together. He is also survived by his brother, Chris (Hollie) Atkins of Racine; his maternal great-grandmother, Ruth Cantley of Bloomingrose; his maternal grandmother, Helen Craft of Bloomingrose; his paternal grandmother, Wanda Atkins of Charleston; and his mother in-law and father-in-law, Rick and Tammy Withers of Henderson, Ky. Jason is also survived by his nephew, Colby Atkins; and his niece, Brooke Atkins, both of Racine; several aunts and uncles; a host of friends; and his special dog, Precious.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at Sherman Elementary School, Comfort, with the Rev. Randy Saunders officiating. Burial will follow in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas. Pallbearers will be Brian Peters, Patrick Gay, J.D. Elswick, Wes Henderson, Josh Huffman, and Justin Mooney.
Friends may call at the Sherman Elementary School from 6 to 9 P.M. Friday.
