Joe Marcum, 57, of Laurel Creek, Lenore, an employee of Performance Coal Company, went to be with the Lord Monday, April 5, 2010, at the Upper Big Branch mining disaster in Raleigh County, along with 28 other coal miners. He was serenaded by angels up to heaven in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He was a son of the late Alex and Garnet White Marcum. Also preceding him in death were sisters, Ethel Marcum, Connie Perkins and Joyce Elliot.
Joe was a member of thee Church of the Living God, a coal miner for 35 years, a charter member of the Lenore Volunteer Fire Department since 1982, a volunteer firefighter and a former board member.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Kathy Maynard Marcum of Laurel Creek; daughters, Kathy Jo Marcum of Upper Sheppardtown and Garnet Marcum Murphy of Laurel Creek; granddaughters, Shaunda Marissa Murphy, Josie Lynn Murphy and Laura Katherine Maynard; special nephew, James Edward White; special grandnephews, Ethan and Aden Alex White; a host of other special nieces and nephews and special grandnieces and -nephews; and sisters, Sharon Carol Marcum of Florida, Minnie (Kyrus) Bowling of Ivel, Ky., Robin (Phillip) Bright of Southside and Jean Parsley of Lenore.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 18, at Victor Christian Center, Lenore. Burial will follow in the Marcum-Maynard Cemetery, Laurel Creek, where friends, family members and brothers of the fire department will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the church. Overflow parking will be available at Parsley Bottom Freewill Baptist Church and Fellowship Baptist Church, Lenore, where shuttle buses will transport visitors to the church.
