They Left Notes

Someone had a pencil.
Wallets were excavated. Receipts
and lottery slips brought to bear. Their luck
in doubt now. Every loved one's name
spoken into the poisoned air. With what shallow
breath remained. Nothing left
but letting go. And love. The love

My beloved calls.
She tells me this. I often say
I love her more than breathing.
But I've never had to prove it

offered with great sorrow to the families of Martin Toler, Alva
Bennett, Jim Bennett, David Lewis, Terry Helms, Tom Anderson, George
Hamner Jr., Fred Ware Jr., Jack Weaver, Marshall Winans, Jerry Groves, and Jesse Jones.
